Our hand selected hardwoods naturally have bacteria blocking tannins but even the densest of woods require an oil finish.
Our cutting boards are finished with a hardy food safe blend of pure tung tree oil and citrus oil. What makes our finish better than others? Well, after years of making kitchen goods meant to come in contact with food we have found many finishes that simply do not meet our standards. Most finishes used by cutting board manufacturers will wash off within a few washes and need continual tedious maintenance (i.e. mineral oil and beeswax...) Our food grade finish differs in that when applied, it is viscous enough to penetrate deeply into the wood fibers and does something that your average mineral oil finish cannot do... it dries and hardens! What this translates to is a food grade finish that both looks amazing and offers superior long-lasting protection wash after wash after wash. This is not to imply that your Kurth Craftsmen cutting board is invincible but that you can hold off much longer on needing to apply a fresh coat of oil.
